There are a few drawbacks to the Inn by the Sea idea. But this is the first place we've seriously looked into, so I'm not too worried about it.
The two major things are:
1. If we want the music at the reception to go past 8pm, we need to rent the 10 rooms above the crescent room. The cheapest room is $189, and the most expensive room is $219. The rooms are beautiful, but that's still a lot of money. We wouldn't afford to pay for those 10 rooms, so if we wanted that music we'd have to try to get half of our guests to rent rooms for that night. I wouldn't be surprised if half of the couples coming would like a room for the night, but they'd have to commit to the room at the same time we commit to the reception site. Or we'll pay for the rooms ahead of time as long as the guests pay us before the wedding, or something. I'm not sure what the politics of this would be, but I feel weird asking people to stay at the inn just so I can have the kind of wedding I want.
2. We can't attach anything to the walls or ceiling, and it's a requirement that I have string lights and japanese lanterns. I'm allowing myself to bridezilla-out about that one thing. I want a beautiful canopy of lights, god damn it.
I'm serious about that, too. If the only way to get the canopy of lights option is to have a wedding in Memae's back yard, I'll do it. I just love twinkling white lights and glowing japanese lanterns; it's the number 1 reason I want a night wedding.
According to the wedding coordinator at the Inn, the best option for getting the string lights and lanterns would be so have a tented wedding, because the sturdy poles that hold up the tent are perfect for stringing all different kinds of lights.

I've posted this photo before, but I think it lends itself well to this post, too. Imagine some string lights mixed in with the lanterns and this is what I'm looking for.
Unfortunately tented ceremonies at Inn by the Sea need to be for 100 people or more, and that's more than double our guest list.
I'm emailing the wedding coordinator for the inn right now and asking if we could bring free-standing structures to hold the string lights and Japanese lanterns so that nothing would be touching the walls or ceiling. If we can't, then I don't know that the location will actually work out.
